EMILY SANDERS
My World
The original inspiration for this piece came from a photograph of my friends and I from the summer of 2014 on a Disney Cruise. It is a snapshot of pure joy and friendship. This picture also holds a hidden message that I attempted to make evident in my work. All of us are from very different places across the globe. Together we represent North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Austria. To embrace this I took inspiration from Ed Fairbun's style of cartographic art. Each face is drawn on a piece of map from our hometowns. The background, however, is different. It is the Atlantic Ocean, the place where we met. I attempted to make the piece embody the feeling that no matter the differences or background we can all come together and create a better world by embracing each other. Our different backgrounds, in fact, are what make this picture interesting. Embrace new and different people. Who knows? There may be a different, even more beautiful personal world waiting to be created.
